ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I am intrigued with fairies and folktales as well as medieval paintings and ancient artefacts. The characters from these art forms regularly travel through my work leaving footprints and images. I sort through the trails they create until I find the ones that could be art.

Inspired by fairies and folktales as well as medieval paintings and ancient artefacts. The characters from these art forms regularly travel through the work leaving footprints and images. The art is the trails they create. Based in Canberra after having lived in the countries of four different continents throughout life. These early travels have influenced the art styles subconsciously reach from different art styles from the rich and diverse cultures. In 1990 I was invited to join the Graphic Investigation workshop run by the master artist Petr Herel. From here I completed my Bachelor of Visual Arts degree in 1996 before moving to Rome. Since then I have found the world of online galleries a useful place. from one of my exhibitions in Italy: "...Romany's Journey began far away not only geographically but aesthetically... Romany Steele has always sought a unique type of relationship between her work and the lived world, the world of travel, encounters with different cultures and traditions and knowledge of the art of early periods...Her work never appears as quotation but as transmutation as if universal values are data which she has absorbed into something simultaneously new and ancient..The outcome, linking in with the abstract tradition of the early years of the century, is testimony to serene inner contemplation and no less to life's miraculous diversity." Paolo Balmas professor of History of Contemporary Art at the First Faculty of Architecture,”Ludovico Quaroni”, University of Rome La Sapienza. I hope you enjoy looking through my art
