About The Artwork

In all the years of painting Staten Island, this is my first ferry-specific project Many colleagues past and present have done wonderful images in various mediums. I realized that it wasn't the ferry that interested me as much as the experience of it. This series of small paintings of the voyage are meant to display together...a quadriptych /four part installation. This is the first of four, with a possible larger scale plan for later. The ferry ride is a shared experience for millions. It varies over one's lifetime depending on age, purpose in commuting, personality and mindset. These elements all evolve and devolve over years. Consciousness during the periods of performing rote, automatic activities recedes...so the imagery not necessarily memorable or describable in words. My attempt is to recreate the atmosphere, semi-aware visuals,...the window focus, the interruptive but lyrical reflections, the blurred horizon and sentience of weather's affect on what we see.
