This is one of the "Gold Lakeland" series, "Summer Meadow". It was several years ago on a summery day, I saw a number of Herdwick sheep on a meadow in the heart of the English Lake District that reminded me of the unique relationship between farmers and the sheep in this region. It is said that this unique breed was once on the verge of extinction, however, it was Beatrix Potter who saved them to conserve the beauty of the traditional farming lifestyle preserved for hundreds of years in the Lake District, which has created the landscape uniquely beautiful. For this reason, the Lake District was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017. I attempted to create a series of portraits of this inspirational landscape by composing visual poetry in a minimalistic way inspired by Japanese traditional art. For inspiration, the ”Gold Lakeland” series was hugely owed to the book "The Shepherd's Life" written by James Rebanks, who has lived and worked in the Lake District for generations. By depicting a Herdwick as an icon with my original line hatching technique as delicate as possible, I played a multifaceted meaning of this land historically, geopolitically unique. This work is only available with prints.

Hideyuki Sobue (b. 1965) lives and works in the Lake District, UK, yet grew up as an orphan in Aichi, Japan. Working with drawing and painting, two historic media that have served as a fundamental means of communication since prehistoric times, he explores the unbroken line in the relationship between art and humanity. Sobue uses an entirely original brush hatching technique employing Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. Created through a fusion of influences - the concept of Disegno in the Florentine school of the Renaissance, oriental artistic heritage and neurological studies - Sobue’s medium attempts to create a platform bridging east and west, and explore the interdisciplinary approach related to the human act of seeing. Sobue has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Japan. Notable exhibitions include “A Letter to the Earth from Beatrix” commissioned by the National Trust and supported by Arts Council England
