VIEW IN MY ROOM
24" x 36" Canvas. The girls and the dragon are up to .25" deep air-dry clay. Acrylic. This painting is highly metaphorical. Who is going to save the world? A girl. The main shadow in the painting is cast by fire. This is a metaphor for the ways that trials bring out might in people that they did not know was there. The owners of power are twofold: that which has manifested in the destruction of the world, and that which is rising in the girl. The girl and her weapons-- a pen and book-- are a representation of women and girls all over the world who are fighting to be educated. These brave people will not sit back in ignorance and watch the world burn. They are fighters with all the right tools. I used my own handprints to create the burning trees as an expression of my own struggle against sexism, misogyny, rape culture, and violence against women and girls. Putting my own hands to this canvas also serves as a reminder that I am the mother of two girls. Though I may pass disempowerment to them, I am aware and alert, and I want better things for them. Girls have power that is yet undiscovered. Trial by fire, they will become the future leaders of this burning world, and help us rise from our ashes. Other metaphors: The use of exposed canvas adds a grainy “unprepared” feeling to the image, just as one might feel if they witnessed their world burning. The birds are scavengers, or opportunists, taking advantage and exasperating a horrible situation. The smoke rising is both the incense that carries our prayers to Heaven and the cause our suffering.
