This work was inspired by a photograph I saw and immediately wanted to paint. In this piece, a man has tears quietly streaming from his eyes. A halo of gold envelopes his head. I hope to spotlight the humanity and natural state that is men experiencing emotion through this work. I want to normalize the showing of emotion for men and the organic, healthy and cleansing abilities that letting go has. There is beauty in pain and in release of emotions - and it is human, natural and healthy to allow ourselves to do no matter who you are or where you come from. I paint in grayscale to reference my graphite, charcoal and drawing roots. I also feel it unites us as one universal human race and allows the focus to be on emotion and storytelling from a face as well as allows me to keep my work cohesive and recognizable as mine.

Richmond, VA based mixed-media artist, Michelle Buser has been creating for as long as she can remember. Michelle completed her undergraduate education at George Mason University just outside of Washington, D.C. She received her B.A in Visual Arts and Technology with a concentration in Graphic Design and Communications. Today, Michelle maintains a career as a professional graphic designer. Though she has drawn all her life, Michelle is a self-taught painter, beginning in 2019. Michelle is a portrait and photorealist artist. Her work features themes of empowerment, connection, beauty, storytelling and emotion. Her work assists in her own trauma and healing journey and is influenced by interpersonal connection and relationships, individual stories and history and deep-rooted human emotion. She works with various medium from acrylic paint, inkwash, graphite, charcoal, ink, pastel, and conte crayon. She often incorporates elements of fashion, culture and texture in her work such as beading and foil. Michelle also works in printmaking and digital art and is a talented photographer. Historically Michelle curated her show, “Reclamation”, in her hometown of Culpeper, VA in March 2019, which showcased a collection of her graphite and conte drawings in collaboration with a fellow artist’s photography. Michelle’s drawings explored the theme of reclaiming and embracing our bodies and therefore, our lives as human beings. Michelle moved to New York City, and was featured in various NYC art exhibitions and galleries such as Brooklyn Art Cave (BAC), The East Village Art Collection (EVAC), Caelum Gallery, HNH Gallery, Chelsea Market, Fable Jones Studios, InkHarlem, The Parlor in Manhattan and more. She's been featured in Bleucalf Magazine Vol. 4 and won the Artists of Today Artist's grant. She has since relocated back to Virginia, to thriving and creative Richmond where she continues to create.
