The Crow is a single page visual news story inspired by the online media science piece that broke in 2018 entitled 'Why Some Crows Commit Acts of Necrophilia'. Scientists found that some crows, upon finding dead members of their species, underwent sensory and emotional overload and as a result, enacted unusual behavioural norms in a state of confusion, as crows have three main outlets (attack, eat, breed). Beginning with a background of reclaimed Kraft, I have used basic shape prints to gain a new media pixelated effect, then layered intuitively with sensation, texture and colour to indicate confusion and rage. The Crow itself is a single piece papercut from reclaimed junk mail with the colour and patterns allowed to show through, overlaid with text collage for story and gouache for shading, texture and shape. I want to feel the crow's confusion, anger and heat in this piece, but moreover I wanted to capture it's energy and drive to live in the face of death.

Exploring the relationships between diverse storytelling and the visual presentation, the pieces I design combine basic, joyful printing techniques from my own photography with papercutting, collage, paint and sometimes stitchwork to create fairy story, folk tale, and video game narratives reminiscent of daily life, blood, nature and creation. My production leans heavily towards recycled items, printing, mixed papers, gouache, acrylics, watercolours and papercutting. With inspirations as wide ranging as Matisse, Gaudi, Dali and Hans Christian Anderson, new combinations are distilled with the inception of digital narratives at their heart. My ingenuity has always sprung from being raised as a feminist by a family of strong, working class Northern women, and the many books I have toured for bright new worlds.
