The anatomy of the saints’ bodies in these icons is thought out in the smallest detail, which, depending on the motive, express the emotions of this event. The painter expresses the suffering of the Savior on the cross through sensation, His pain is usually emphasized by red colour, geometric shapes that resemble tears or drops of blood. Expressive lines increase the viewers’ anxiety, making them immerse in the scene represented in the icon. In the paintings the Body of God is the body of the afflicted person, with underlined, even clearly hyperbolized structure of muscles and bones. The attributes of the Lord’s Sufferings (red crown, wounds, cross) are devoid of realism. The artist depicts them through geometric shapes: on the one hand – focusing on their symbolism, on the other hand – emphasizing the human and divine nature of the image. Artist’s typical technique includes painting the Savior's nailed palms facing outward, and their position can be read in two ways: as an emphasis on suffering and as a blessing that the Son of God gives to the viewer. /Katazhyna Yakubovska/
