About The Artwork

From the exhibition catalog: „At the center of The New Collection are new idols and their ideals. The name of the exhibition, and the artworks included, are a part of Debord's Society of the Spectacle: rapid trend changes, hyperproduction and unstoppable placement of commercials that lead to oversaturation of visual content in private and public space. The kitsch man, who comfortably accommodated himself in the society of the spectacle, designs his life according to instructions given by the mass media. He is also the starting point of contemplating the post-modern man, his concerns about his own appearance and its framing within the parameters of the commercial industry. The New Collection ironically looks at the fiction of an easy life. The painter reinterprets popular culture thereby drawing out the grotesque to the surface, hidden underneath shallow and polished appearance. The shallowness of earthly delights is embodied in flat, retouched, and collaged figure modeling. Their rubber positionings are staged, nevertheless as shaky marionettes, while masks, instead of faces, bear the symbol of a screen. Generic and stiff smiles accompanied by sincere, naive glances, are but a part of the effort to present life as idyllic – that is, to create a new, refined version of reality that solely exists in the media simulacrum via Image. (...) In the society of the spectacle, according to the author, „the design is more important than content, commercial than a product, and photographs of the act from the experience.“ Written by: Hana Katanić Translation: Kristina Šilipetar
