About The Artwork

"the hope gate" is a gestural, intuitive piece involving heavy textures and deep layers of color and nuance. The jewel tones juxtuposed with tropical teals are anchored with a mysterious earthy foreground. It always delivers. It came out of nowhere and had to get out onto canvas. Those are my favorite paintings, and after 20 years, they are the rarest. I painted intuitively early on, but then had a lovely collector group, who had requests. The intuitive painting took a back seat to considered content, color and composition, often involving other people's favorite things. Which was a delight. Do not misunderstand, please. But intuitive painting seemed a bit self-indulgent when you're putting food on the table. Then, it became harder to do. The more skills and experience I had, the harder it was for that "intuitive painting" to even show up. So, I value them when they do, and this one was particularly pleasing to create. It is a pleasure to look at, too, and I like it better every time I see it.

Painting was not my first life's work, but it has fed my family for the last 20 years, and I am proud of that. I came to it late, with a lifetime of travel and stories to paint. I worked hard at them, full time all the time and the reward was that people liked my stories -- still do! -- so I kept painting them. They've shown in museums and galleries, sold to cities and corporations, and to thousands of individuals all over the world who loved them and put them in their homes. I consider myself blessed.
