About The Artwork

We have in our gardens this lovely old Rose that originated in the gardens of Thomas Jefferson at his retreat home in Forest Virginia called "Poplar Forest". The old city grave yard here in Lynchburg goes back to the early 1700's and has an incredible collect of roses that go back its founding. Some having been collected from cuttings of 14th century specimens in England . We love to walk that garden in the late spring when its all in bloom and each year when they sell cuttings we add one or two of the older more interesting and winter hardy varieties to our own garden. I've painted these roses many times. I have been working primarily in Egg Tempera now for the last 2-3 years. Starting with the construction of my own hand made poplar panels coated and polished with up to 10 coats of marble dust rabbit hide glue gesso which are then polished to a piano key smooth finish. The entire process is so basic and primitive. Making paint with egg yolk white wine and ground pigments. Many of them are "found" pigments in my own region of VA which is rich in natural ochre deposits. I painted this in more of a flowing "designed" feel with strong lines and movement than my typical works. The under painting is done in silverpoint and hand made oak gall ink. The ground is a hand made true gesso panel on birch as are most of my works. This piece is framed in a hand made arts and crafts open mortice frame of highly figured white oak finished with a light stain made of walnut juices and linseed oil. After it cured I put a coat of neutral tongue oil on it to seal it, and it has a hand carved copper label with a chemical brown patina.
