About The Artwork

This 20" x 16" original artwork is a contemporary still life oil painting that's about honoring tradition and the freedom of creative expression. The pineapple is a long-standing symbol of hospitality which felt important to me in this painting as a sign of tradition. Mixing in larger panes of color reminded me of the windows in my kitchen. The cobalt blue bowl of lemons and limes a sign of the sometimes-tart moments in life and the tiny vase of yellow daffodils a light from the more delicate parts of my inner being. Simplistic lines and vibrant color are the methods I use to take the subjects before me and transform them into something unique and fundamental with meaning and emotion as a visual experience. This oil painting was painted on a gallery wrapped canvas. It is a signed original and comes wired to hang without a frame. It can also be framed.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
