About The Artwork

When you live in northern Europe you associate short days with winter. My work sent me to Singapore in 2000, I just hadn't thought of or been prepared for the quick dusks and dawns around 6 every day, the evenings were hot and humid. In the day the light so strong. I had developed a habit of going for a walk near my hotels, although understood in some places walking is often not such a good idea mainly because of the heat and humidity. I decided to walk along a passage at the side of my hotel, too big to be an alley too small to be a road. At the far end there was abundant vegetation and trees, it was quickly darkening and the humidity ramping up, over the road was an old colonial style building in red. The image and the moment stayed with me. For some reason I chose to paint on rough hessian with a very open warp and weft. The colours came out dull and dark. I got bad feedback and so left it there. Recently I varnished it, the colours lifted but when the light is at a certain angle the varnished canvas looks like it is sugar coated and sparkly. I quite like the mood, heavy damp air.

I was a painter to begin. I started doing computer art in the late 70s, programmed at first but then evolving into a couple of strands of practice. Today the painting and the computer work interact sometimes, because of digital media I also retrieve and revisit old work when it merits it. Art theorists and historians tend to demand a kind of monotony in creatives' work, I lost interest in that kind of thesis a long time ago so I have fun and do what interests me, hence the range of styles and approaches. If you like anything please show it and tick like, it provides useful motivation.
