About The Artwork

I scaled a high resolution photo to 33 x 44 pixels, then prepared an 84 inch canvas and painted a grid of 33 x 44 40 mm squares using a paint brush, a 3D printed stencil, and the inverse color (1452 unique colors in acrylic). You can see this stage of the painting in one of the photos. The colors were mixed by eye to an approximation. The next step was to paint the original colors (1452 complementary colors in oil) in the form of an X over each painted square. Theoretically, this would result in a neutral painting if the Xs and the squares were properly canceling each other out. The painting radiates color, regardless. It has a vibrant neutrality that is calming and radiating light. Seeing the actual painting is a different experience than seeing the images on a display. The scale brings to view the saturation of the color. Even though the painting has a minimal geometry to it, I do not recall a painting ever requiring so much preparatory work, such as graphically preparing the images and the grid, 3D printing the stencils, and using new tools. So, there's all this type of image manipulation and theorizing on this method of painting for me that I must explore further. Much of it relates to the obliteration of the identity through repetition and minimalization. Seeing and mixing the individual colors is a purely visual experience. Reproducing the colors with painting materials, however approximately, is rewarding and almost mindless. Though the painting is minimal and reductionist, it brings a lot of questions and invokes a lot of thought on the meaning of painting and identity. I especially enjoy how the painting looks under various computer displays, resolutions and sizes. Please download the images, view closeups and thumbnails. The painting is supposed to be hung closer to the floor than shown, such as you would see a seated figure at that elevation. About 10-14" from the floor would be ideal.
