About The Artwork

The sunset on the Serengeti plains casts an evening glow on the natural inhabitants of this area in Africa. Depicted are giraffes, antelope, and the endangered African elephant. The elephant is shown as having a small set of tusks, displaying them with his uplifted trunk. While the animals in this entire area are losing natural habitat losses, they are also in danger from poachers and the drought conditions. This means without human intervention, the African elephants will be extinct within 6-10 years according to estimates by experts. Already extinction status has claimed a couple of species of rhinos, one within this last year-2012. The Western Black Rhino declared extinct in mid 2015. I love painting this type of subject matter, and I hope you will enjoy looking as well. The stretched canvas is gallery wrapped and I have painted all the edges with black, so it may be hung or framed. The painting has a final coat of varnish.

"Art is not art until a rich person buys it. Then, it is art." Pablo Picasso -- Donna Dixon is a painting artist born in Georgia, USA. She has lived in both Houston and Austin,Texas as well. Dixon, who is a life long, self taught artist, trained and worked in the Medical Lab field until an early retirement. Dixon's style has been described as Modern Expressionism. She describes her artwork as colorful and positive and says she is inspired by Impressionist painters and nature is one of her most common sources of inspiration. Elephants are one of her favorite subjects. She supports efforts to protect both African and Asian elephants, along with other endangered species. "For me it is all about the passion of life. I want to capture it with as much passion as possible. I am captured by the beauty & spiritual purity of animals and nature. This is a 'never-ending' fascination. I see all people, places and things are artworks in the making." . Dixon was honored to have artwork included in a previous collection for Saatchi Online, curated by Ms Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator at the Saatchi Gallery London. 'Originals for $500 and Under Collection.' She got her kicks behind the scenes. In school, she took the opportunity to paint sets and scenic props, as opposed to acting on the stage. Today, instead of high school plays, you may spot her art in the background of Hollywood movies. Two paintings of Dixon's can be seen in the 2012 Universal Studios film 'Wanderlust' - a comedy produced by Judd Apatow, directed by David Wain and starring Paul Rudd with Jennifer Aniston.
