Twilight Falls Along Dunn Street Print

The sun sets behind a cluster of houses in Bloomington, Indiana. I was drawn to this scene by its interesting combinations of shape and colors. I paid particular attention to the juxtaposition of warm and cool colors. I also took care to balance these colors so as to achieve harmony without diminishing the interest created by their contrasts. The painting's main source of unity is the recurrence of the sky's orange throughout, e.g., in the chimney of the foremost house on the left and in the lit-up window of the teal house on the right. In several places, I used this orange as a base color to receive glazes of other colors. For instance, note the orange showing through the ultramarine blue in the foreground.
