About The Artwork

This piece was inspired by a painting by Hi Lihuai's "Hands". When I started painting this, I wanted to attach my own story to this subject. It's the feeling of nervousness and the anxiety. The hands are pale, with pressure and anticipation. As this piece was painted back in the 1960s, I wanted to imagine the life of a Chinese woman, with silk sleek cut dresses. The swirled up hair and the fierce image out into the streets. The woman would be to mingle, impress and to be of manner. Only when the woman goes back into her home where she releases her self from the chains, the hands are pale from the pretend and pressure. With veins blue, she nudges into her own flesh to feel the blood still flowing. I used oil paints as my medium for this piece to bring out the most raw texture and color of the hands. I roughened up the canvas with gesso to add more texture which gave sharpness. As for the viewers, I want them to feel the emotion and the story behind this piece while attaching their own meanings of what they see. *Hanging hardware would not be included for this piece.

Be it times of turmoil or happiness, it's always my box of paints and paper that give me the comfort I need. My inspiration always comes from the people and places around me. My work is based from nature and organic aspects of life. I want to be able to capture experiences into a painting, to help my viewers feel what I feel when looking at my work. It's my form of preservation of moments, a memoir through art. My name is Aamna Kamal and I am a mix-media painter. My journey with art properly took off back in 2018 when I was doing my O-levels. I started to experiment with different mediums and found out the oils and acrylics work best for me with the art style that I wanted to adopt. After attending numerous exhibitions, conferences and sessions, I have learned about the best of ways to express myself through my art. While always having a hard time in communication. painting has helped me say what I couldn't say in words. It was a quote by Rembrandt, one of my inspirations for the art style I chose, that I truly live by as I make my art. “Practice what you know, and it will help to make clear what now you do not know.”
