Urban Jungle Print

A city of gated condominiums that portray a reality in most of Brazil. The deep socio-economic divide has led people who can afford to move into heavily guarded gated compounds leaving poverty and violence behind the gates. This painting was inspired by a very poor town I visited while traveling through the Northeast region of Brazil. The small town in the state of Alagoas had been depleted of its water supply and residents, who already lived in poverty, have to buy it or walk several miles to access available water sources. I imagined a place where chaos had not only prevailed, but becomes a way of life. In this painting, I portray a rape scene, police brutality, girls carrying water home, the endemic problem of dogs on the street and theft right outside the fence of a luxury condominium. The wall of one of the buildings in the condo bleeds to show that although they were able to hide behind tall walls, they are still targets and their sense of security ends once they have to leave their compounds.
