About The Artwork

The painting is in oils on stretched canvas, of a view down to Vauxhall on the river Thames in London, UK, with Battersea Power Station sitting below a setting sun. It was painted in oils, mostly in situ. The painting has a wooden frame finished in a slightly reflective coating on wood to give a worn impression. Hanging hardware is in place and the picture is ready to hang. I was inspired to paint this view after a friend showed me a picture he had taken on the area. A distinctly industrial scene, with cranes at Battersea, and scaffolding adorning nearby flats and high-rise, I decided that ,with an interesting light, it could make an interesting painting. As it happened, the painting then became more about the sky, rather than the detail of an industrial landscape. I took up position, and as the sun began to sink, I could see less of the buildings, just ghostly outlines, and a river boat swinging out to deliver its passengers into the setting sun beyond. The sky became ever more incandescent, its colours saturating before me. I worked quickly to try to capture the forms of light and cloud building and dissolving above me, and I must admit to becoming breathless, not only at the intensity of concentration but also at the stunning colours and shapes developing above. This is what I have tried to capture: the shear beauty of a mesmerizing sky over an otherwise bleak and work a day industrial landscape. I hope to inspire the viewer to look more deeply at day to day scenes, and hope I have conveyed the sheer excitement I felt when I painted this piece.

Working from Combe Martin in beautiful North Devon, Chris is never short of inspiration and never far from gorgeous subjects: from the mysteries and colours of woodlands and rivers to seascapes and secret coves; Devon has them all. Chris's work allows the viewer to get involved, to imagine the space, fill in the gaps of action and participation, and, even, guess what might be behind a tree, a boat or building that isn’t discernible from the creation on canvas. With time at Reading Art College in the early eighties, Chris evolved his own approach: ‘’My approach to each representation is one of total mental, and, spiritual involvement, I try to be completely ‘present’ in the process. The peace and joy I experience in putting the work down on canvass or paper, whether in oils, pastels or acrylics, is one I strive to pass on to the observer.’’ Chris's work happily hangs on the walls of occasional exhibition goers and private collectors alike in both the UK and Internationally.
