About The Artwork

Vista A view of the mind or of the eye? A far-reaching mental view or an optical impression? Sky and sea meet at an elusive edge. Move closer. Try to reach it. You can’t. Yet two distinct realms appear to touch one another. Each distinct part is in harmony with itself: the airbrush’s conversion of paint into particles into depictions of air is congruent. The wet-on-wet paintbrush technique correlates to its suggested watery element too. I also allow each element to subtly respond to each other, going back into them until the finish. The finished whole is a dichotomy of the flat and the textured; of the intellectual and earthly and a harmonious disjunct is formed. What remains is an aesthetic, emotional disturbance. Enjoy the vista. **On quality linen with aluminium frame. Varnished to a satin finish with UV protection. Ready to hang with D-rings and cord. Sides painted white**

I completed undergraduate and postgraduate study in painting, concerning myself with postmodern theory and debates in reflexivity. I became focused upon pure abstraction with no reference to the external world and researched the problem of meaning in art. My postgraduate art concluded in the non-use of the paintbrush. Subsequent professional experience as an artist reconnected me to art without intellectualisation, and with the paintbrush once more. Now as a practising fine artist, a re-integration of theory and practice has occurred. Aware of the real world but by no means trying to represent it. Aware of painting as process and questions of connotation yet finding discernible meaning through semblance and form. My paintings do not seek to disengage with the sensory world nor to uphold it. I do not use art historical colour references for style or meaning and do not attempt to fit into the illustrious lineage of painters who deal with this subject matter. My paintings are truly contemporary. They attempt to occupy a space 'in-between' where experience and the inner life meet. From palette to canvas, an epistemological exploration occurs in a meeting of the mind and the empirical world. My paintings do not exclusively inhabit either one of them.
