About The Artwork

I began this painting en plain air on Waimanalo Beach, a charming beach situated on the southern end of Oahu's Windward Coast. I sought primarily to capture of drama and vitality of the stand of coconut palms that dominate the scene. I painted the crowns of these palms in two layers. The first layer consisted of reds, yellows, and oranges. After this layer dried, l laid down darker strokes of blues and greens. I was careful to leave some of the warm first-layer strokes entirely uncovered. This, I felt, helped to convey the liveliness and character of these palms. NOTE: The original is framed, double-matted, and protected under anti-reflective Museum Glass ®. Please see the accompanying images. The framed artwork's dimensions are 14.5 x 17 x 0.8 in. The dimensions of the painting itself (i.e., without the frame, mats, etc,) are 8.0 x 10.5 in.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I often find inspiration in the outdoors, painting and drawing en plain air. Before I settle on a place and subject, I always have to roam about for some time, "shopping" for a scene that I find particularly compelling. A major component of my process is physicality, which includes experiencing a place through multiple senses. The smell of freshly cut grass and the feel of the sun's warmth on my skin, for example, can affect me powerfully. I try to paint my experience, including my emotions and non-visual sensations.
