This painting was based on sketches I made from dancers rehearsing. A male and female dancer face different directions as they stretch together at the barre; you can see the muscles stretching in the woman's shoulders. The background is blue-grey with abstract brushstrokes. Degas was a major influence for this work. This painting is on an archival-quality canvas panel. It has a gloss finish with deep, rich tones that are hard to reproduce in a photograph. This work ships unframed. A photo here shows what it would look like in an inexpensive frame.

Currie is an American artist who has lived in the Northeastern US, California, Washington DC, and now lives and works in Michigan. His paintings explore line and color and often merge semi-realistic with modern and abstract approaches. He uses multiple layers of paint to create texture and richness of tone. He experiments with ways to combine aspects of drawing and painting, sometimes painting pure abstracts to loosen up or explore new combinations of colors and textures. Figure paintings are developed in the studio from photos taken on the street while traveling, sketches from memory, or from charcoal or pastel studies drawn in sessions with live models. Currie is a self-taught artist who has been drawing and painting since childhood. He draws and paints live models with groups of other artists in Michigan.
