About The Artwork

This is a young wolf, slightly curious and yet distant, gazing at the viewer. The wolf to me symbolizes the ambiguous relationship humans have with the natural world: not quite a part of it and yet somehow living along with it. This is pastel, by the way, not oil pastel.

I was born in 1949 in Bournemouth, England, but grew up in Canada. I've lived and taught in South Korea from 1993 to 2014, where my interest in art developed.I am a Canadian writer/professor, and have lived in Seoul for the past twelve years. I come from a family of artists (both my mother and my sister are practising artists), although I personally never drew and painted until I came to Korea. My interests had always focused on the written word instead (I write science fiction and fantasy). But something about living in Korea's city culture stirred my creativity, and led me to try to paint in my spare time. These are some of the pictures I have done in my years here.I like the overlapping of the natural, both plant and animal, with some man-made products. (Solitude and the Siberian Iris are not part of this series of what I think of as natural montages.) Of course, the natural is far more beautiful than the human imitations, but there is something about the joining of the three that to me represents life and the spirit that animates it. In this way, I have sought to illuminate the meaning or structure that is life.
