About The Artwork
My series "Bugs of the Yucatan" is a series of 12 paintings. While spending 10 days in Merida, Mexico I photographed hundreds for VW bugs, hundreds of encaustic floor tiles and other general observations of life in the Yucatan. The resulting body of work combines two elements of daily life that is easily over looked: what is stepped on and common transportation. Because the "classic" VW body type was manufactured in Mexico into the 2000s it is a very common vehicle, but for many Americans the classic aesthetic conjures a sense of nostalgia.
