About The Artwork

Description: “A Thousand Cranes" In Japan, a young girl named Sadako Sasaki was exposed to radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima and developed leukemia. She decided to fold 1,000 origami cranes when she was 12 years old, because the legend of the cranes says that they live for 1,000 years. There are different versions of the story: in one she was too weak to fold any more after making 644. Her classmates folded the remaining 356 to honor her memory. Another story says that she finished the 1,000 cranes before she died. Today a statue of Sadako with an origami crane is at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Every year people bring origami cranes to her statue on Obon Day, when people honor their departed ancestors. These origami cranes were part of a display for the Fall Chrysanthemum show at the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park, Baltimore, Maryland. They fill my heart with sadness and hope every time I see them: sadness for the innocents who die in war, and hope that there will be no more war someday. As a lifelong pacifist, I believe that there are no winners in war. May this image inspire you, the viewer, to share this hope and work to make it a reality. The special limited edition of 10 is printed by HD Chromaluxe®, a dye transfer process onto special coated aluminum which produces exceptionally vivid colors. It comes complete with a gallery mount hanger, which makes it project from the wall slightly in a stunning display.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
