CBRPNK FLWRS The Cyberpunk Flower Series In 2006 I replaced a nicotine habit with a photography habit, taking advantage of the landscaping fetish of the apartment complex where I live, where beds of fresh blooms are being constantly planted, photographing flowers became a relaxing alternative to smoking. When I took up bicycling and discovered that the bike paths on New York City’s rivers are abundant with blooms, I felt I had a mission to document these ubiquitous, yet largely ignored clutches of beauty surrounding the city. As the work continued to evolve I had to confront the fact that I knew why I was making these photographs, but no idea what my goals were or how the photographs fit into my larger body of much different work. The tradition of floral imagery is so deep and so vast, that coming from a background of conceptual photography, making a beautiful flower image began to feel like a dead end instead of a celebration. It was in the midst of retouching an image I had titled “Using My Painting Degree For The First Time In 37 Years” that I realized I was limiting the scope of the work by treating it strictly as photography. I began to use my photographs as base images that I would then “paint” in Photoshop. I called the resultant imagery “Neo-Classic Psychedelia” but as the work progressed deeper into the digital realm, pixels flowing and mutating into impossible blooms, I embraced the electronic aesthetic and, in the spirit of a favorite literary genre coined the term Cyberpunk Flowers. Bridging the gap between Classicism and the Contemporary, between organic and digital, these are flowers from the future, equally at home on a wall or in a virtual “metaverse”. I personally print every 11x14 or 11x17 image, using Epson Claria Inks on Canson Fibre Rag, in signed and numbered limited editions of 10. Large unsigned prints are available through Saatchi.
