Instrument & Environment This body of work had it’s genesis with Tina Barney about 15 years ago, she told me to shoot myself, I laughed and waited ten years to try it, instead focusing on shooting hundreds of other women. A decade later, I found myself in front of a mirror with my camera, realizing for the first time that I had the ultimate model in myself, I could read my own mind, and didn’t have to give myself a glass of wine just to get relaxed enough to undress for the camera. I shoot myself in mirrors because I get instant feedback about how I look through my lens. I can move into the position I want and capture the female form exactly the way I want to. I shoot in antique mirrors because it allows me to use a shallow depth of field and focus on the glass, which gives me a wonderful soft focus on the form which echoes both my painted work and some of my favorite photos - out takes from my commissioned shoots, slightly blurred from movement and low light where the potent sexuality of my subject cuts loose and somehow I capture a little bit of it and keep it forever. The focus becomes the occlusions in the glass, the imperfections on the surface of the reflection taking the foreground and the form receding, becoming a powerful background, somehow softening the impact of the raw female form and taming it for popular consumption. Printing on aluminum is the perfect blend of soft flesh and a hard medium, producing a beautiful clarity of light and accenting the imperfections of the mirror.

To say Heidi's had a diverse education is understatement. Thus far, it has ranged from total immersion in Tibetan language and culture in a nunnery in Nepal when she was eight years old, living and traveling thru out Asia and Europe, to studying photography with Ansel Adams's protégé Howard Huff in her college years. After she married and began a family of her own, Heidi's photographic eye shifted from the exotic locales of her earlier work to intimate portraiture of women in their most private moments. As her focus continued to weave around women and all the roles they play in the world, her exploration of technique began to incorporate not only traditional, painterly media, but also all of the toys and tools of the digital and electronic realms. Despite being up to speed on the technical revolutions in photography, her work remains grounded in the deeply personal and the profoundly human. Davies has has shown at galleries in Sun Valley Idaho and Jackson Hole Wyoming. She is in numerous private collections worldwide. Heidi's latest work, " Instrument and Environment" is a collection of self portrait work, which was a recommended assignment by well know photographer and friend Tina Barney.
