Breaker Bay Cloudscape - Limited Edition of 10 Print

Inspired by Aotearoa, (the land of the long white cloud). I love capturing the casual drama of the cloud formations in Wellington as the city reinvents itself constantly with the never-ending parade of clouds, painted by the sun and the sky, dressing the land in a continuous cloak of colors and shapes that defy the imagination delight the eyes, and stir the soul. In the bottom left-hand 8th of the image, you can see Venus, this adds to the picture's sense of distance/isolation, which is a constant theme in my work. Obviously, the main reason for that is the land itself, which is (as we all know) one of the most "distant" landmasses in the world. We are closer to Antarctica than we are to New York, London, or Paris, and the uninhabited nature of the country is one of the reasons that people come here, and others find it a very compelling reason to leave, there is however no getting around it. This particular slice of life is not typical of the city, which is why I like it. This was taken in Breaker Bay -facing the Remutuka ranges, which are part of the National forests, spoiler alert, there are no people there. I think coupled with the sky this provides a frame of what New Zealand would have looked like when the original mariners landed here, The Maori, The Dutch, or the English would have been greeted with such a mysterious scene. I love the unique color combinations that Aotearoa serves, Azure blue and Cotton Candy, Chocolate clouds bubble on the horizon, and smoldering sunsets are brushed by winds and burnished by the sun, all in an inimitable majestic drama, found only at the bottom of the South Pacific.
