Horto in urbs The slogan for the city of Chicago is urbs in horto or city in a garden, these photos are a reflection of my exploration of those gardens in the city. These photos reflect the way I view the world. They reflect the middle way; they are at once both abstract and representational, detailed yet softly focused, expansive yet with a very narrow depth of field. I see them as a meditative look at our natural environment, allowing the viewer to get lost in small areas of plants rather than the enormity of the whole. Which is really the way I think we view the world anyway. Traditional landscape imagery is about the grand shared view while these pieces reflect the individual eye. These pieces also differ from traditional landscape images in that they are not really natural at all; each photo is taken in a garden. I shoot nature in the unnatural environment of the city, when you don’t have nature around you it forces you to seek its attention rather forcing it’s self on to you. The experience of the urban garden is one of isolation and of stillness in a chaotic place. Gardens in the city are relief spaces which allow the passer by a temporary respite from the chaos around them, I believe these photo’s can continue that experience where ever they may be hung providing the viewer a meditative break from what ever chaos may surround them. For the urban landscape unlike the grand vista is an individual impression rather than a shared grand experience in these photos I am sharing with you my individual experience.
