About The Artwork

Photogenic Painting of a Flamingo Flower (Red Anthurium). Throughout the history of art, flowers have been utilised for their large variety of colours and shapes. Similarly, Mahler employs these to explore the boundaries of photography. By using colour photograms (without the use of film or a camera), Mahler is going back to the primary definition of photography; drawing with light. By working under conditions of complete darkness, as required in a colour darkroom, chance is introduced into the system, and creates a ‘surprise’ in every print. Mahler’s Photogenic Paintings collection was created as a reference to the passing of time where the flowers depict different stages of bloom and decay. A colour photogram is created by placing an object directly on a photo sensitive paper. The image created by the impression that is left on the paper by the light passing through the object. In his book, The Pencil of Nature, Henry Fox Talbot, one of the inventors of photographers referred to it as Drawing with Light.
