ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the canvas of life, each thread creates its own story. My journey took an unexpected turn when the Russian invasion of Ukraine uprooted me from my ancestral home. Finding myself in a country whose families suffered under the oppression of the Soviet Union, where I cannot be fully my own, I am the personification of the aggressor. The decision to leave Russia is a stance against a government policy that has not only changed my location, but has thrown me into a whirlwind of difficulties. I have found refuge in a shared home where I live with nine other people. Our bonds are forged by support and a shared belief that together we can endure. Living among a diverse group, I have come to appreciate the closeness that living together creates. Even in silence, we witness each other's vulnerability and humanity. In the face of catastrophe, I realised that the impermanence of life allows us to treat every moment with attention and understanding.
