About The Artwork

The "Lost Highway" series of photographs are inspired by several things. They are made with an iPhone while I drive around Los Angeles on the highways. Using an iPhone, mastering it, forcing it to produce unique imagery is part of the goal, but not all of it. The images reflect the diminishment of the driving experience as the California of my youth has just about vanished. When I made these images, California was suffering through a prolonged drought, and you can certainly see that -- a desperate absence -- in the images. But there's something else hear, too. It's the insistence on taking a routine activity -- driving -- and imbuing it with a distinctive claim: this is what I see. And then, some of the images in the series bear distinct homages to Rothko, a favorite artist of mine, in the use of color and blurred tension lines. Lastly, I've incorporated the image into my Faux Poster Series. This series features my work in fantasy gallery posters, as part of fantasy gallery shows. In this way, I make a point about the arbitrary nature of fame and iconography, especially when it comes to artists and their art. Why not me?

I was an advertising still life photographer in NYC in the early 90s. I moved to Los Angeles, earned an MFA from USC in screenwriting, and embarked on a writing career. I've worked for a major network TV show and sold scripts to the studios. I began making photographs again a few years ago, strictly for myself -- personal work. I'd like to share it now. I print and sign Original Artworks; "prints" are less expensive. They are made by Saatchi and are not signed by me.
