This is a Swallow-Tailed Bee-Eater at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. I observed this bee-eater for over an hour, and followed it's behaviour. It had an underground nest, very close to this perch. It would go out an catch various insects, each time returning to this perch. It then killed the insect by thrashing it against the branch, before feeding it to it's young. This behavioural pattern continued for several hours, and after each capture or delivery, the Bee-Eater would return to the same perch. While this bee-eater looked great just sitting on it's perch, I really wanted to capture it's beauty in flight. It was very fast, and would arrive or depart with very little warning. I loved the background created by the shallow depth of field, so had little room to manoeuvre in determining it's in-flight location. What transpired, was this shot, depicting this bird, feet forward and wings spread out, a split second before arriving at it's perch.
