Quiet Maltese Afternoons Print

Captured in Malta during the early winter season, I hopped a boat over to Città Vittoriosa in Birgu. The streets were practically empty, save for the odd elderly local wandering back from their daily walk - it very much reminded me of the sleep siesta time in Spain when residents would step out of the peak-time sunshine and get some rest in the cool shelter of their homes. Wandering through the charming, weathered streets of Birgu, I came across a solitary old vesper parked in a small passageway and something about this scene inspired me to capture the moment with my camera. Set against such a beautiful yet simple environment, where the street itself tails off into the curve beyond, local laundry hangs above drying in the mild afternoon warmth, where once can easily miss an ornate porcelain mutt sat outside a nearby home blending into the pastel tones of the walls and door frames. A throw-together of decay, decadence, simplicity, culture, colour, locality and serenity - the image, to me, signifies a strange sense of escape and scope that invites the viewer to soak in the finer points and details. In a nutshell, I feel like I'm back at that moment of peacefulness and happiness, where a world of chaos is temporarily silenced in tribute to what we take for granted as we explore and discover the basic nature of beauty wherever we may find it.
