About The Artwork

This photograph is part of a series of landscapes, urban and rural. As a Social Anthropologist I am interested in looking at people as part of a culture, and in particular the interaction between people and their environment. The scene was a view from a friends window in Oslo, at the time. It was captured during, what is referred to as, the "Blue Hour"; Time of twilight, when the scenery turns blue, just before the darkness sets in. The photograph has come to talk about my relationship with my home country; It gives a certain sense of nostalgia and longing. We always want to go to this peaceful and somewhat lonely place while at same time realising that if we did, the reality of it would not live up to our idea of it.

Through exploring the relationship between our inner world and the physical body Maria's work represent a visual discourse on the contemporary female condition. With particular interest in the domestic sphere she allows the absurd to collide with the mundane and pairs humor with poignancy to investigate notions of self, identity and our emotional backyard. The uncertain nature of the boundaries between mind and body, individual and social and private and public, past and present comes alive in Maria's work.
