“The eyes have only to close for the world of the soul to open.” The Ennead. It's incredible how a statement made so long ago is applicable yet today. The very same feeling that there is something greater to see, to learn, to understand is still inherent in this modern age. This is what Marc's work is about; an attempt to expose the essence that is too often veiled by what we accept as reality. The pressures and fast pace of life denies us the time or even the inclination to look, let alone endeavour to look beyond. Marc's landscapes give us a glimpse of what the soul sees. Whether its in the quality of light, the formation of the cloud or the general atmosphere of the entire piece, his paintings offer an insight which is hard to photograph, film, or even describe in words. Marc was born in the English Lake District, the land of Coleridge, mysterious history and singular light. Both his parents were artists and, eventually, he too succumbed to art and what his father described as "a contagious disease of life". His early life in the film industry started at Shepperton Studios in the 70’s with BBRK owned by four gifted art directors It was the age of an emerging Ridley Scott, an exhilarating time, the halcyon says yet to be repeated. These days, Marc has swapped executing briefs from others to his own, a harder brief if anything! The biggest influence in recent years has been the chance acquisition of some vintage dry pigments, saved from being thrown out and forever lost. These pigments, aside from their rarity, required going back into the past, learn, then reinventing for the future. In dealing with the future, it's useful to learn from the past and here, my mother’s sole recommendation of an art textbook, ”The Painter in History” by E. Short, describes the journey well. “Every age believes that it is achieving something final in its expression and revelation, and, regardless of history, hugs the flattering belief that no succeeding generation will be able to undermine its formulas. Our own age is no exception . . . To deny to painting contact with the mystical in human experience, would deny art of its deepest significance . . . that the graphic arts are not understood by any lessor effort of thought than that needed to comprehend life itself.”
