About The Artwork

Two female mannequins touching in a delicate, almost secretive way. To me, this image has a kind of erotic charge. That’s what inspired me to take the picture in the first place. It’s also touching, in a figurative sense...moving and tender. It’s not hard to imagine that, in a distant future, artificially created beings will be able to have feelings of love and affection toward each other. I converted the digital image into black and white in order to emphasise their elegant, slender hands and fingers. I also love their reflected shadow, where we can see their hands and fingers joined together. To me, the shadow represents what’s really in their minds: to be able to fully express their emotions in a society that, perhaps, is not yet ready for it.

Hi ! I'm Gabriele. I was born in Busto Arsizio, a small city in Lombardy. I'm a self-taught, amateur photographer. I've been living and working in Tokyo as an Italian teacher since 2001. The birth of my son in 2004, sparked my passion for photography, and for a few years, I was exclusively (and I'd dare say sometimes excessively) focused on taking pictures of him. Around 2009, with both my wife's and my son's patience growing rather thin, my attention gradually shifted to the city I was living in. I started to take pictures along my way to and from the schools, and in my days off I would take long walks in areas I didn't have the opportunity to explore in my working days. I started with a digital camera, and after a couple of years I succumbed to the temptation of the analogue world...I now use both, but mainly digital. In my photographs, I try to capture the beauty, dynamism and quirkiness of this fascinating city.
