About The Artwork

Vietnam Ladies at Cao Dai Temple, 1994 The Cao Dai Temple, located near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, was finished in 1955 when the Cao Dai Army was formed following the Japanese occupation of Indochina. Caodaists believe that all religions are ultimately the same and seek to promote tolerance throughout the world. All religions are honored here. Worshippers at the Cao Dai Temple strive for world peace and harmony with beliefs steeped in a number of world religions. Followers must obey the five virtues of Confucianism – humanity, obligation, civility, knowledge and reliability and have belief in the Buddhist principles of rebirth and karma. As I was wondering through the temple, I saw these four ladies sitting near a balcony. I move as close as I could before they saw I was there and shot off several photos before they turned around. I’ve always felt that images taken from behind can be just as powerful as from the front. Limited edition prints: 15 Signed and numbered Image size: 18.6 x 12.23 H Print size: 20 x 24 Printed on Ilford Gold Fiber Silk paper 310 gram, 100 % cotton rag.

I grew up with photography as my father worked as a reporter/photographer in the late 1940s to the early 1950s, before he became involved in the aerospace industry. Through him I became fascinated with the magic of photography. I began to take photo classes in college and later attended Art Center College of Design, graduating in 1976. I had a small studio on Sunset Blvd through the late 1980s then did a trip to Thailand and decided to move there in 1990. Over the years I have worked for Habitat for Humanity, World Vision, and done assignments for The United Nations, Newsweek, Gamma Liaison, Getty Images. Animal Planet, Homeless International and other organizations in Asia.
