This piece is from my urban-type series and informed by visual artists such as Al Held and the often overlooked Norman Ives. These artists use typography and lettering as their primary means of artistic expression. I have visually knitted a web of 0's that comment on themes such as the social connections made through the random juxtaposition of people as they experience urban life, be it a music event or a bustling market—it is a visual meditation on the value of encounters that urban living enables. The stark aesthetic is reminiscent of the simple and unexpected beauty found in modernist and brutalist architectural forms and urban landscapes. The zeros are all from the same modernist typeface family and highlight the optical power created from a simple visual palette, in line with the original ethos of modernist design principles.
