About The Artwork

It is often noted that the poet is the hunter of the truth. And this piece is about identity and style and the power of fashion to elevate everyday life into a meaningful experience, which can be viewed as a type of street poetry with its ability to provide self-expression through the celebration and joy of style. The work is based on my interests in how the materiality of fashion impacts self and others perceptions and how fashion or style can help alterer one's mood, attitude and posture. The Poet pays homage to the black dandy historically and contemptuously from Africa to Jamaica to Harlem, London, and beyond. The aesthetic is informed by Picasso's Cubism portraits and the textures of Art brut artist Dubuffet filtered through the street styles of Basquiat.

My work is informed by emotional responses to colour and the figurative and abstract forms found in natural and urban settings. I have produced creative works for high profile museums and galleries including the V&A and the RA, London. Recent MA study in Art and Design has taken my practice in a typographic/pop-cultural direction. I will continue to develop the work through visual experimentation to produce art that communicates the artistic intention to the viewer in a visually compelling manner.
