About The Artwork

The Distorted Torso is the first abstract figurative sculpture that I have produced, inspired by the atrocities of war and the human psyche. I created this piece from a piece of yellow sandstone; I hacked away simply with hand tools until I visualised the idea I was going for. The medium lends itself to be shaped by filling away unwanted material. To protect the sandstone from the environment, I sealed the stone with a special resin. I wanted to investigate a different form of expressing my art; since I enjoy working with my hands and the feel of different textures, I decided to improve my understanding of sculpting. The abstract figurative sculpture seems an ideal way to express the idea that the artist has in mind, and yet it is complex enough to make the viewer ponder for an instant.

I am a working artist, mostly self-taught with over 30 years art experience, working on a variety of media: Oils on canvas and wood panels; acrylics and mixed medium, in particular, wall paste, sand and epoxy resin. My work can be considered as an impressionist style painting, working in impasto and making use of the palette knife as my main tool. I am currently focusing mainly on painting seascapes and wildlife, I want to master the various skills required to paint with the painting knife, the application of subtle pressure, texture and marks for example. Painting methods I often incorporate people, boats and seabirds as part of my compositions. My aim is to capture the effect of light, colour, form and movement. Recently, I have been investigating surrealist or semi-surrealist painting based on dreams and working on abstract figurative sculptures with Plaster of Paris and other materials.
