This work was inspired by the theme of interconnectness in society. It's interesting to ponder how we work for each other to help build community and world, how we function as a society locally and globally. As we are all interconnected on this level, we start to function as a total organism. This organism currently is probably at its very early stages since there is much waste of resource and energy through inefficiency and conflict but it can still be recognized as a total entity. The 3 parts of the sculpture interjoin to form the total piece. The sculpture is freestanding. The western red cedar with beeswax gives the colour a warm brown with lots of character in the grain. This form lends itself to the wood nicely and vice versa. Using the material of wood gives a natural and calming feel to the form. The top part has 3 pieces of wood laminated, the base part has 2 pieces of wood laminated and the 3rd part was carved from one block of wood. Careful attention is paid to the grain orientation when gluing up the pieces and in carving out the form. The sculpture is smooth everywhere and is enjoyable to hold as well as look at. It will look really nice placed in a special spot in your home. Part of the concept is to enhance the surrounding interior space by giving off a tranquil yet mysterious feeling. This hopefully will stimulate conversation and inspire those who view it.
