About The Artwork

When I devised the sketch for this form I was exploring the "artificial", the "somewhat strange yet useful". The fir leg which to me represents something somewhat artificial yet purposeful like a crutch which is somehow permanently attached to the organic form. As usual with these abstract wood forms I intend to create a sense of resolution as a whole form within which the tensions play out between the parts. So, this form with it's intense dissonance between the two main parts had to have an equally intense resolution. I carried this out through the use of the structural balance, the complimentary contrast in wood types/colours/grain and the subtleties of the forms. Mahogany is such a prized wood for carving that I decided to keep the clean knife cuts. This decision also fits with the almost bony looking processes, the darkness of the waxed mahogany and the seemingly inappropriate leg. The hole represents opportunity to me - a sense of unfilled potential we often call "future". This works as well to give the sculpture more of a personified feeling and character which I think adds to the oddity of this piece. The leg is joined with a dowel and glue. The whole sculpture is coated in beeswax which I wanted for the purpose of darkening and enriching the mahogany as well as bringing out the grain pattern in the fir.
