About The Artwork

Steel table sculpture representing a cross section of once molten elements A Basilisk is a mythological creature that turned living things to stone with it’s petrifying gaze. The sculpture represents layers of molten earth that have built up over time, the once liquid form evident but now frozen. Developing the sculpture I concentrated on the process of using repetitive form of material - flat steel bar, to generate concepts and capture the movement of elemental reactions. All my sculptures are hand made, each Basilisk sculpture has been made to be unique. They differ in size, form and in the finish of the steel. This version has a burgundy powder-painted finish that contrasts beautifully with a white or pale background. I am happy to make similar sculptures, sized and finished to suite your space.

Working predominantly in metals, I create an eclectic range of sculpture and contemporary furniture. Highly aesthetic in nature, you will find much of my work curvaceous and tactile, but with a coarseness that is lent from working with bare steel or stainless steel. My style ranges from figurative to abstract and is always in context with its environment. My current collection "˜Elements' focuses on Earth, Air, Water and Fire, and describes the reaction of when those elements meet. Developing the collection I concentrated on the proccess of using repetitive form of material - flat steel bar, to generate concepts and capture the movement of elemental reactions. The forms are designed appropriately for indoor display, but are perfectly suited to larger scale and outside installations for private or public spaces. http://www.philipmelling.co.uk http://www.artquid.com/artist/philipmelling/philip-melling.html htt
