The Caribbean Reef Octopus is one of the most intelligent invertebrate species. As the name suggests, is resides in the warm waters of the marine reefs. Caribbean reef octopus changes its appearance easily, adjusting its colour and texture to blend into its surroundings using special skin cells. It is a foraging predator, mostly eating molluscs, crabs, and clams. At times it can be cannibalistic. It captures its prey by spreading its arms over them like a canopy. It can release a cloud of dark ink while escaping a predator such as a bony fish or a shark. The Caribbean reef octopus mates only once during its lifetime. A female octopus lays eggs in a crevice of the reefs, and protects them for 8 weeks or more until they hatch. The Caribbean reef octopus has been depleted in some areas due to excessive fishing, and is negatively impacted by the climate change and the pollution of the oceans.
