About The Artwork

Cromlech is a Welsh word for prehistoric megalithic structures, where "crom" means curved and "lech" means flat stone. In English, the term usually refers to dolmens, which are believed to be the remains of prehistoric burial chambers. The most famous and enigmatic is the cromlech of Stonehenge, its construction seems to have been carried out between 2800 BC. and 1100 BC in four different phases, it has orientations attributable to astronomical study, in fact it was probably intended for the cult of the Sun. It is possible that it was used to "count" the phases of the moon and also as a kind of clock that was based on the beam of light reflected by a stone placed not far from the "main entrance". So far, however, there are no exact theories but only hypotheses about the purpose of the cromlechs. In Nabta Playa there is a calendar cromlech, where two monoliths have a north-east alignment in the direction of sunrise on June 21 and is older than Stonehenge by at least a thousand years. The term is also occasionally used to indicate some more complex examples of megalithic architecture, such as the cromlech of Almendres in Portugal. The conceptual work "Co.Crom / COntemporary CROMlech" compares two eras very distant from each other but united by a return to essential forms, to minimalism. The cement used to build the sculpture represents a "tomb" material (as well as the stone intended for the Dolmens, of which the cromlechs are a composition) that puts an end to the life of nature which must make room for building construction.
