Having spent many years in the fashion, garden design, publishing, and manufacturing fields, Scott was able to gain a global perspective on fine art, architecture, and interior design via living and working throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. Noting that a love and desire of beautiful wood sculpture was a common thread running through these many cultures, Scott decided to pursue the dream of providing collectors with outstanding examples of the best that Mother Nature has to offer. Relocating to a small town on the wild and rugged southern Oregon coast, Scott proceeded to spend years amassing a vast collection of wood from local ocean beaches and the area’s rivers. Each piece is chosen for it’s own unique, abstract, and timeless sculptural qualities. Collectively, each is a victim of floods, logging, fires, and the general ongoing ravages of time. These natural works of art, found mostly in remote and inaccessible locations and are laboriously rescued but only after Mother Nature has done her part. Following collection, an immediate subtractive process must begin in order to prepare the wood for the drying phase. Once that is completed, the subsequent curing period can take many months, even years for larger pieces, before they are ready for completion. Careful refinement of each piece is undertaken so as to retain as much of the original character as possible. The final finish is achieved giving great attention to detail using ages old hand tool manipulation followed by countless hours of hand sanding techniques. Absolutely no varnishes, lacquers, polymers, or other artificial substances are used to achieve a satiny, smooth as glass finish. Scott feels that, aside from their toxicity, the use of these substances creates an unnatural “plastic like” appearance and feel. Scott notes that: “It’s exceedingly important to me that the individual be able to “feel” the wood, therefore no barrier must come between the wood and the hand. These sculptures are sensual, meant to be touched, caressed if you will, every bit as much by the hand as the eye” Scott emphasizes that great care is taken when deciding how to mount a piece for display. “The scale of the base, proper angle, and viewing height are all crucial elements to consider when displaying sculpture.” Artist statement: “It is my goal to provide superlative examples of timeless abstract wood sculpture that are a collaborative effort of both nature and man.
