About The Artwork

When I am working with clay, I constantly find myself in a 'place' of reflection and conscious-ness. For me, the process of making art brings out emotions, insights and new ways of seeing life. Recently my reflections have often been over on the times we live in, and the interactions between individuals and groups in society. In a world where it becomes more and more dangerous to freely express ideas, I feel that art is the best way to maintain freedom of expression. A cherished by-product of my work is the instigation of reflection over these critical aspects of life in others. But the art I create is only synthesis of my own experience of being alive - it is a blend of my emotions and my changing beliefs translated into colours, shapes and forms. It is my way to celebrate the impermanence of life. Interpretations of it belong to the observer.

"Creating objects that I’ve never seen before is the propelling force that pushes me forward. The excitement of creating something you couldn’t describe in any other way ends up becoming an obsession." My name is Eduardo Montani and I am a ceramic artist born in Brazil in 1986. My first experiences as an artist, in a more intensive way, happen when I did a BA in Architecture. The formal composition studies I developed at that time gave me a new perception of forms and the relation between elements and shapes. Those exercises opened a whole new field beyond architecture to explore. At that moment I knew that I would be an artist for life. Having worked as an architect for over 10 years, ceramics was a natural choice of primary media - it being an essential material in my field. It was on 2021, during an Artistic Ceramics Residency, that I was able to explore this media further. I am passionate about clay because of the endless possibilities for creation it provides to a skilful artist. For as long as I can remember I’ve been asking myself: why do things have to be done the way people always have done them? In fact, I never stopped asking this question and, this way of seeing the world is reflected in much of my work. Some of my influences are modern architecture, traditional Japanese ceramics, and specific artists like Oscar Niemeyer and Isamu Noguchi. But the biggest influence of my work is life itself – in a way, all I create is a synthesis of my experience of being alive. I am currently located in London where I am researching new ceramic techniques and developing a new body of work.
