About The Artwork

This is a slip-cast earthenware "walking boat" with a celedon green crackle glaze. The glaze has intentional fine fractures, just like ancient ceramics. This piece is a "fanding" or "four-legged cauldron" which was inspired by ancient Chinese ding, which were ceremonial vessels. The legs were based on both my dog and cat (just to be fair). The sculpture is intended to be left empty, since empty is the new full.

I have been a practicing visual artist for almost 30 years. I received a Fulbright grant for the 2011-2012 academic year to Norway. My goal was to create sculpture that utilized the vessel form to investigate the concepts of voyages and migration. The culmination of my project was a sculpture installation at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. I was born in Seattle, Washington, USA, in 1964. I now live in Kenmore, just north of Seattle. Originally, I was a painter, then about a dozen years ago, I made a serious "plunge" into 3D work. (My website has more details.) Initially, my paintings and sculptures were inspired by the scenic beauty of western North America. Now I am exploring more figurative work, much of it inspired by art history, not just observation. www.MikeAdamsArtist.com www.MikeAdamsArtist.com/blog2/
