About The Artwork

In Trees we Trust / On A Confiance dans les Arbres Original Art by Stéphanie Kilgast Sculpture, 2017 Tin Can, Polymer clay / boîte de conserve, pâte polymère 22 H x 11 W x 10 cm Around a tin can, a growing tree surrounded by vibrant red mushrooms is mutating into a human hand. Trees have a fascinating intelligence. They communicate through their roots and with the help of mushrooms. They are capable of helping each other out, sharing ressources but also warnings of threats. They do communicate through electrical signals, but also olfactive and auditive ones. Their roots will grow towards a river because of the particular sounds it makes, and they will create certain poisons when eaten by predators or attract predators to certain pests they want to get rid of.

Inspired by natural forms, Stéphanie Kilgast’s artwork is an ode to nature and its current biodiversity. Plants, mushrooms, insects and other animals encounter in a vibrant swirl of colors under her brush or sculpting tools. Since 2017, in her series “Discarded Objects”, she grows colorful organic sculptures on manufactured objects, celebrating the beauty of nature in a dialogue with humanity, questioning the lost balance between human activities and nature. Her work has a cheerful post apocalyptic feel to it, a reassuring reminder that nature has the capacity to grow back, if we only let it. Her work has been exhibited in North America, Asia, Australia and Europe. French, born in 1985, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, currently resides in Vannes, France.
