Sans Toi Print

This work is finished by hand, the smooth porcelain polished to bring out the natural texture. The work is fired to a high temperature, almost to the point of collapse, so that when timed just right, the finished product, results in a movement of the porcelain. The failure rate is incredibly high, but the works that survive the kiln without breaking or cracking or collapsing are that much more special. The porcelain is thrown on the wheel, and then altered and cut, carved, and polished by hand. The carving of this particular work took around 40 hours. The porcelain is then allowed to dry slowly, and after a few weeks, is fired to around 2300 degrees F. Unusual fact about this particular sculpture, After throwing the original form on the wheel, I reached for the beach glass pebble I had around my neck, but found nothing there. A search through the clay revealed my little silver chain, but no stone. As I carved and sculpted this piece, I kept thinking I would find my glass pebble, but I never did. A donation to the sculpture I suppose, or to the new owner. I bid farewell to my gorgeous little stone and give thanks that it graced my presence at all.
